One of the scariest stories I've ever heard came from my ex-husband. At the time we were still an ocean apart and talking on the phone when something scared him badly.
He was living in a large cottage in Cornwall, England that was reputed to be haunted. There was a set of stairs that kind of twisted their way up to the second floor, and he was in the bedroom on that floor. The stairs could be very dark (it was an old house) and there was one window at the top of the stairs that let in any available outside light.
While we were on the phone, he heard a very strange noise coming from the hallway outside the bedroom door. Later he would describe it as a recording of a pig crossed with a dog and being played backwards.
I never felt a thing in that house, and never saw anything but a big black dog on the front porch from time to time (which had been seen by just about everybody who knew the place).
A very scary thing to hear, and I'm only glad I didn't experience the growling noise. |
