Just a note to help let everyone know how important it is for you to do equipment checks every time you get ready for an investigation...
Tonight we went out to do some follow up investigating but could not find the microphone that we use to capture our evps. Always the masters of rolling with the punches, we simply decided that it would be simple enough to buy another one on the way. Badda boom, badda bing, within minutes we were back in business and raring to go.
We set up several times, went through our normal routine that we have found to be successful, and were pretty hopeful that we had a good shot at capturing some new contacts. Upon returning to review the recordings, however, we made a horrible discovery.
The recordings were completely blank.
Oops.
Jessica did some testing and found that we had not pushed the microphone into the jack all the way, so there was no way that the computer could pick up anything, even the team's own voices, much less any potenial evps.
All this is to point out how very important it is to test every piece of equipment that you intend to use when going out to an investigation. After 15 years of investigating, I know how exciting it is when you are getting ready to go, and how easy it is to overllook even the simplest things, but a little anal retentiveness early on saves a whole lot of "I can't believe we wasted all that time" comments later on...

Just a note in addendum ...
I just wanted to let everyone know that our tech specialist did absolutely nothing wrong in setting up for recording in regards to the microphone. As I have said, I have been at this for some time now, and I should have thought to test before we did anything else. My bad...
At any rate, we did have som really good experiences during the investigations, and as I always say, any time you go out into the field, whether you get any evidence or not, as long as you learn something or stretch your comfort zone a bit it is NEVER wasted time.
Happy hunting! |

Oooops! I guess you gotta pay more attention when you plug in the microphone!
Why don't you just get a tape recorder? I've been pricing them, they aren't that expensive. |

tape recorders are harder to analyze. i like using the computer because i can go back and filter the audio
but we might get a tape recorder in addition to the laptop one day |

| Oh, yeah, I guess. How do people who use tape recorders analyze what they get though? I mean, there has to be a way for them to do it, right? |
